PRCL Skill Self-Assessment Guidelines
Refer to the information below when asked to assess your current skill level. For more detailed information, you may refer to the Assessment Rubric.
New to Curling
- Little to no experience with curling
- Still learning the basic rules, how to deliver a stone, and fundamental strategy
- May have tried curling once or twice casually but have not completed a full season
Novice
- Completed at least one season of curling
- Understands the basic rules and structure of the game
- Delivery is developing but inconsistent
- Has a basic understanding of strategy but relies heavily on the skip’s direction
Low Intermediate
- Has a few seasons of experience
- Becoming more consistent in delivery
- Understands common shot types (draw, takeout, guard) and can execute them with moderate success
- Beginning to anticipate strategy rather than just following instructions
Intermediate
- Comfortable, consistent curler with a reliable delivery
- Can execute a variety of shots with reasonable accuracy
- Understands strategy and contributes meaningfully to shot-calling discussions
- Feels at home in a recreational league setting
High Intermediate
- Strong recreational curler with a well-developed delivery and good shot-making consistency
- Has a solid grasp of strategy and can skip or vice effectively
- May participate in bonspiels or other recreational events outside the league
Advanced
- Among the stronger curlers in a recreational league setting
- Delivery is technically sound and consistent under pressure
- Understands and applies strategic concepts confidently and reads the ice well
- Can lead a team effectively
- Regularly participates in events beyond the home league
Expert
- Exceptionally skilled recreational curler with highly consistent and technically refined shot-making
- Has a deep understanding of strategy and ice conditions
- Presence meaningfully elevates the team’s performance
- Widely regarded by others in the league as among the best they have played with or against
